It is important to keep a few things in mind when travelling in Iceland. It is necessary to keep up with the weather forecast, even during summer, and road conditions. You must get familiar with the Icelandic Króna (currency) and pack appropriately for the season you are visiting, you can expect all kinds of weather all year round. And there is no need to buy water because the tap water is great!
Currency, Credit Cards
The monetary unit of Iceland is the Krona (ISK). credit and debit cards are accepted in most shops while foreign currencies are very rarely accepted in Iceland. All major currencies can be exchanged at the airport or at the three banks we have which are Landsbanki, Íslandsbanki and Arion banki. The opening hours are normally from 9:00-16:00 and closed during the weekends. There are ATM machines all around the city which can be used to withdraw money. Iceland is not currently a member of the European Union and does not use the Euro.
Tax Refund
You can claim your VAT refund at Arion Bank at Keflavík airport, which is located in the arrival hall opposite the car rentals. Passengers must reclaim their VAT before checking in their luggage. Tax-free service is available at the currency exchange counter when the tax-free counter is closed.

Reykjavík City Card
The Reykjavík City Card offers free entry to a great selection of museums and galleries, all swimming pools in Reykjavík, and free unlimited travel by bus within the Reykjavik Capital Area (it does not include the bus nr. 55 to the airport as that leaves the Capital). In addition, the card also gives discounts on various tours, in shops, and on services.
